Rainwater harvesting is the gathering/accumulating and storing of rainwater. There are numerous types of systems available, the most prevalent being ground run-off (i.e. hillside) and rooftop. Rooftop collection is typically utilised to provide and store water for re-use as either partial or full replacement of the mains water supply within a property. Its use is ideal for supplying the likes of domestic & residential fire sprinklers.
There are a number of benefits, such as:
- Substantial cost savings in water supply from the occupant’s local water company.
- Preservation of one of the environment’s most precious resources; an added advantage for those wishing to construct in a more eco-friendly manner.
- In flood-prone areas, rainwater storage can alleviate storm-water runoff. On schemes where attenuation tanks are a pre-requisite, these may be replaced by an adequately sized rainwater storage tank, enabling further cost savings.
